Karakoram Horizons Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Fly to Gilgit – Naltar Viewpoint – Hunza

The journey begins with a scenic flight to Gilgit, offering early aerial views of the Karakoram ranges. Upon arrival at Gilgit Airport, a brief city orientation introduces the regional atmosphere before continuing toward Naltar View Point. This stop provides panoramic mountain scenery, with an optional excursion to the alpine lakes for those interested, subject to additional charges. The day concludes with a drive along the Hunza River toward Hunza Valley, where the dramatic transition from river plains to high mountain landscapes becomes increasingly evident.

Day 2: Baltit Fort – Altit Fort – Ganish – Eagle’s Nest

The second day focuses on the historical and architectural heritage of Hunza. Visits to Baltit Fort and Altit Fort offer insight into the former princely states and traditional defensive architecture of the region. The exploration continues at Ganish Old Settlement, one of the oldest preserved communities in Hunza, known for its communal spaces and wooden mosques. In the late afternoon, travel ascends toward Eagle’s Nest, a renowned viewpoint where the sunset gradually illuminates Rakaposhi, Ultar Sar, and surrounding peaks.

Day 3: Rock Carvings – Attabad Lake – Hussaini Bridge – Borith Lake

This day highlights the natural and archaeological features of Upper Hunza. Ancient rock carvings along the Karakoram Highway reflect centuries of trade and movement through the region. The journey continues to Attabad Lake, formed by a natural landslide and now recognized for its striking turquoise waters. Nearby, the Hussaini Suspension Bridge provides a dramatic crossing experience over the Hunza River. The day ends at Borith Lake, a tranquil high-altitude wetland surrounded by stark mountain scenery.

Day 4: Passu Glacier – Passu Cones – Khunjerab Pass

The route proceeds toward the Passu area, where close views of Passu Glacier and the iconic Passu Cones illustrate the raw geomorphology of the Karakoram. From here, the drive continues north to Khunjerab Pass, the highest paved international border crossing in the world, marking the boundary between Pakistan and China. The landscape shifts into wide plateaus and alpine ecosystems characteristic of Khunjerab National Park before returning to Hunza by evening.

Day 5: Hopper Valley – Hopper Glacier – Ganish

The fifth day is dedicated to Hopper Valley, located in the Nagar region. The valley is known for its terraced fields and expansive views of Hopper Glacier, where multiple ice streams converge. Walking opportunities allow for close observation of glacial formations and rural life. On the return journey, a revisit to Ganish Old Settlement provides time for deeper cultural appreciation and photography in softer evening light.

Day 6: Return to Gilgit – Departure

The tour concludes with an early drive back to Gilgit. The final journey retraces the scenic route along the river valleys before arrival at Gilgit Airport for departure, marking the end of a comprehensive exploration of Hunza and Upper Hunza’s cultural and natural landscapes.
